Yet, they are not treated as full-time government employees. They are labeled as <em>\u201cvolunteers.\u201d<\/em> During the pandemic, they were asked to conduct surveys, ensure isolation protocols, spread awareness, and even carry COVID samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seema recalls, \u201cWe were working in red zones, but were given no PPE kits. No gloves. Sometimes, not even water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she contracted fever and chills after visiting a COVID-positive home, she quarantined herself in a cowshed. No government official checked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Women, Work, and Invisibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seema\u2019s story reflects a larger issue\u2014<strong>invisible labor, especially by women<\/strong>. The ASHA program, though praised by international bodies, relies heavily on <strong>underpaid and overworked women<\/strong> who serve out of necessity, not choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before the pandemic, Seema was juggling household chores, agricultural work, and community healthcare. COVID simply added risk without compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When ASHA workers across India began protesting for better pay and recognition, Seema joined too. She held a placard that read:<br><strong>\u201cCorona ki yodha hoon, mazdoor bhi. Sarkar se insaaf maangti hoon.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>(<em>I am a warrior against corona, also a worker. I demand justice from the government.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-e415b0de wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-transform:capitalize\">Hope in Solidarity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Their voices were long ignored, but slowly began gaining momentum. Protests erupted across states\u2014from Delhi to Madhya Pradesh. ASHA workers demanded minimum wage, protective equipment, and official status as healthcare employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seema was chosen to speak at a local health rights conference. It was the first time she held a mic.<br><\/strong>She didn\u2019t speak in English.<br>She didn\u2019t quote laws.<br>She just spoke her truth.<br>And everyone listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Her Fight is Ours Too<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of today, Seema still works as an ASHA worker. Her pay remains inconsistent, her hours undefined. But she\u2019s no longer silent. She\u2019s aware of her rights, her worth, and the power of unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHum jaise logon ke bina system chalega nahi,\u201d she says.
